Folding-Arm Awnings

Shade a Steyn City patio or entertainment deck on demand — no posts, no permanent roof, gone into its cassette the moment you want winter sun back.

A north- or west-facing entertainment deck is one of the best-used spaces in a Steyn City home for exactly half the year, and one of the least-used for the other half — baked out by summer sun, then shaded by nothing when a bit of winter warmth would actually be welcome. A folding-arm awning is the one product that answers both halves of that problem with the same install.

Why it suits the estate

No posts means no interrupted fairway or parkland view and no clutter around a braai or outdoor kitchen. Projection runs to roughly 3–4m over wide spans, and solution-dyed acrylic fabric holds its colour under South African UV rather than fading out in a season or two.

The wind-sensor case — not optional here

This is the one place we're most direct with Steyn City clients: an awning caught open in a Highveld thunderstorm gust can be destroyed in minutes. Motorised operation paired with a wind sensor auto-retracts the awning before the gust arrives, protecting what's usually one of the higher-ticket items on the order. Crank-handle operation exists and costs less, but on an exposed entertainment deck, it puts the decision — and the risk — on someone remembering to wind it in before a storm.

Cassette options

Full cassette encloses the fabric and arms completely when retracted — the better choice for a weather-exposed position. Semi-cassette and open mounting are lower-cost alternatives for more sheltered spots. Fixing substrate matters too — brick, timber fascia and steel structures all take the bracket differently, which is exactly what the site visit is for.

Honest limitations

An awning is a shade product, not a rain product — fine at a shallow pitch in light drizzle, never a substitute for a proper roof in real rain. Wind ratings are real engineering limits, not suggestions, which is the whole reason the sensor matters.

What an awning costs over a Steyn City deck

What you pay for is shaded ground: square metres under the fabric with the awning fully out, fitting included. Crank-operated, that is in the R3,500 to R5,500 per square metre range, an open or semi-cassette on a sheltered deck cheapest, a sealed cassette on a weather-facing one at the upper. Choose the motor and wind sensor and expect R5,500 to R7,500 for every square metre of shade.

On an estate deck with nothing upwind we would rather you spent the difference on the motor and sensor than on a larger fabric, because an awning that retracts itself before a storm is the one still standing next season. A short run above a door carries a minimum charge, and the fixing substrate moves the number too. All of that is settled at the free site assessment, and the written quote afterwards carries your real price.
